Introduction

In recent years, essential oils (EO) have surged in popularity, with more people turning to these natural extracts for their potential health and wellness benefits. But with so many EO companies, how do you know which one to trust? In this comprehensive guide, we'll compare some of the top essential oil companies to help you make an informed decision.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Essential Oil Company

What are your goals with essential oils?

  1. Health and Wellness:
    1. I recommend using Symphony of the Cells by Boyd Truman (LinkedIn) and www.truwellness.net, one of the founders of the doTERRA.
    2. Consume Essential Oils for health reasons? I recommend using high-quality oils from Young Living and/or doTERRA.
    3. External use: Typically, essential oils are applied to the skin above the organ. For example, to help with digestion, rub fennel essential oil on the belly. To help with hair growth, rub rosemary essential oil on the scalp. To remove toxins and heavy metals from the body, apply clove essential oil to the bottoms of the feet. Hot oils like cinnamon can irritate the skin, so it is recommended to dilute the essential oil with olive or coconut oil before applying it over the heart.
    4. Internal use: Take essential oils internally by adding them to water or in a capsule. There have been mixed reviews on the benefits. For example, adding a few drops of citrus essential oils (e.g., lemon, grapefruit) is beneficial for weight loss, but a better solution is to add a whole lemon to water, blend it, and drink that. Another example is using fennel essential oil internally for digestion. Again, a better solution is just eating several fennel seeds after each meal.
    5. Emotional use: Essential oils are great at bringing buried and trapped emotions to the surface. Seek help from Jesus Christ as you deal with these traumas of the past, typically by forgiving someone who offended you and/or asking for forgiveness from someone you harmed. There is no shortcut to this work, and if, at times, you feel like you are hanging on the cross naked, you are in the right spot! We all have to do this. Lastly, remember that nobody cares what you have done. We fixate on our personal problems instead of worrying about someone unless we are an insignificant busybody or Karen incapable of seeing inwardly.
    6. Remember that citrus oils (lemon, tangerine, etc.) can cause discolored spots (hyperpigmentation) if applied to skin exposed to the sun. So, use these oils in the evening or on a body covered by clothing.
    7. I recommend consulting with an Aromatherapist for guidance. You can find one in your area by visiting the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.
  2. Massage and Topical Application:
    1. Recommend any of the oils from the companies below.
    2. Remember, when used in massages, the essential oils are diluted with another oil, like coconut oil.
  3. Aromatherapy:
    1. For a diffuser, consider making your blend with single oils. Also, I don't recommend high-priced oils from Young Living and doTERRA since most of the oil will be lost in the air.
  4. Soap Making and Skincare:
    1. Essential oils will evaporate as the soap cures for 2-8 weeks. How much evaporates is unknown, so I don't recommend using high-priced oils.
    2. Soap briefly contacts the skin before washing it off with water, so it is questionable how much gets absorbed into the skin. It is better to add the essential oil to the skin where it has a higher chance of being absorbed.
  5. Cleaning:
    1. Recommend using the most economical essential oils for cleaning purposes.
    2. High-priced oils aren't necessary unless budget isn't a concern.
  6. Business Opportunities:
    1. If you are interested in Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) and all the hype, research companies like Young Living and/or doTERRA.
    2. Multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes employed by essential oil companies like doTERRA and Young Living have several significant drawbacks. These business models prioritize recruitment over product sales, leading to market saturation and limited earning potential for most participants. Individual distributors frequently face high startup costs to inventory products and face ongoing purchase requirements, resulting in financial strain. Also, emphasizing personal networks can damage relationships as friends and family may feel pressured to buy products or join your downline. Additionally, exaggerated health claims about essential oils may mislead consumers and cause harm if misused. The pyramid-like structure of MLMs typically benefits those at the top while leaving the majority of participants struggling to make a profit despite promises of financial freedom and flexible work arrangements.
    3. For e-commerce, consider creating your private-label brand. Resources like Steve Chou's mywifequitherjob.com offer guidance on starting an e-commerce store.
  7. Create Essential Oils at home.
    1. The trend of people making essential oils at home has seen a notable increase in recent years, driven by a combination of factors, including a growing interest in natural products, the do-it-yourself movement, and a desire for more control over the quality and sourcing of personal care items. This practice involves using methods such as steam distillation or cold-pressing to extract oils from various plants and herbs. Enthusiasts often cite the satisfaction of creating their products, the potential cost savings, and the ability to ensure purity as motivations for home production. However, it's important to note that creating authentic essential oils at home is a complex process that requires specialized equipment, significant knowledge of plant chemistry, and adherence to safety protocols. Many home producers are creating infused oils rather than authentic essential oils, which involve steeping plant materials in carrier oils. While this home-crafting trend reflects a broader shift towards natural and artisanal products. On the one hand, homemade oils may lack the concentration of professionally produced essential oils. Still, on the other hand, unscrupulous manufacturers may intentionally dilute their essential oil with coconut oil or add impurities and advertise as 100% pure essential oils to increase profit margins.

Now, let's examine some of the top players in the essential oil market.

Before we dive into the comparisons, let's look at some key factors to consider:

  1. Quality and Purity
  2. Sourcing and Sustainability
  3. Price and Value
  4. Product Range
  5. Company Reputation and Transparency
  6. Customer Service and Support
  7. Educational Resources

Young Living

www.youngliving.com Founded: 1993 Known for: Seed to Seal® quality commitment

Young Living is really geared towards purchases by an individual for either themselves or family/friends. This called a not for resale (NFR) purchase.

What is the process to sell Young Living products? The basic understanding of Young Livings Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) is you only have two options to sell their products: Option 1) can only sell in person, such as door to door sales. Problem is you have to maintain inventory and YoungLiving won't have any records of the sale. Option 2) you can sell on a MyYL personal website which costs $10 a month. The problem with Option 2 is Young Living doesn't provide an index to browse these personal websites. Also cannot do any searches, such as I want to see the Young Living sales associates in my town/city. So, you have to do your own marketing to drive traffic you your MyYL personal website so you can earn a 25% commission.

You cannot sell any other way, such as using social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc), your own website, ebay, Amazon, and so on. Regarding the third parties. As of November 15, 2014, Customers and Brand Partners with Young Living are no longer permitted to sell on 3rd party websites such as eBay, Amazon, etc. Customers had the opportunity to register their 3rd party websites with Conduct between Oct. 15 and Nov. 15, 2014. Anyone who didn't not register within that timeframe will be denied. Please contact Conduct@Youngliving.com for more information.

Cons:

  • Secrecy Breads Suspicion. Why the confusing price structure? Why aren't the SDS available under the product like PlantTherapy.com does? How does Young Living promote you, the sales associate? • "SDS, or Safety Data Sheets, are published for safety information on bulk quantities of products and are generally not intended for consumer use. Young Living® cannot grant general requests for these sheets. SDS are only given in limited distribution and upon request. If SDS are required for hospital, commercial, or other industrial usage, your request will be reviewed further." • subscribe and save
    • Young Living's Loyalty Rewards program (must enroll and make min $50 monthly purchases).
  • Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) structure may not appeal to everyone
  • MLM don't scale well in terms of selling products. What does scale is the pyramid concept where you can earn a commission from those sales associates signed up underneath your account.
  • You can only sell products from a personal MyYL website (https://www.myyl.com/justasampel), which costs $10.75 a month
  • Brand Partner get 25% discount, (How to become a Brand Partner)

Nature's Fusions

www.naturesfusions.com Founded: 2009 Known for: High-quality, affordable oils with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Located in Orem Utah.

The essential oil industry has experienced notable shifts in recent years, with established multi-level marketing (MLM) companies like doTERRA and Young Living facing declining sales while newer, direct-to-consumer brands such as Nature's Fusion have seen growth. This trend can be attributed to several factors, including market saturation for MLM brands, changing consumer preferences, and increased scrutiny of MLM business models. doTERRA and Young Living, once dominant forces in the essential oil market, have struggled to maintain their market share as consumers increasingly seek out alternatives. Companies like Nature's Fusion have capitalized on this shift by offering products through more traditional retail channels, often emphasizing transparency in sourcing, organic certifications, and competitive pricing. This change reflects a broader consumer movement towards brands that offer perceived value, quality, and ethical practices without the complexities associated with MLM structures.

They also perform Gas Chromatography (GC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS) known as GC/MS reports. Lastly, they are known for their lenient return policy - "Home of the forever guarantee - anyone can return any product, for any reason, forever."

Aura Cacia

Aura Cacia - Founded in 1982 and acquired by Frontier Co-op in 1993. Known for: high-quality essential oils, widely available in retail stores and using square bottles like Young Living instead of the traditional round Boston bottles.

Aura Cacia is a well-established player in the essential oil industry, known for its wide range of pure essential oils and aromatherapy products. Founded in 1982, the company has built a reputation for quality and sustainability, offering organic and ethically sourced oils. As a brand of Frontier Co-op, Aura Cacia benefits from strong distribution networks and a commitment to social responsibility. While specific market share data for individual essential oil companies can be challenging to obtain due to the fragmented nature of the industry, Aura Cacia is generally considered one of the larger mainstream essential oil brands in North America. Its products are widely available in natural food stores, health food chains, and online retailers, giving it a significant presence in the market. However, it's important to note that the essential oil market is highly competitive, with numerous players including multilevel marketing companies, small artisanal brands, and other established natural product companies. Aura Cacia's market share, while substantial, likely represents a moderate portion of the overall essential oil market, which continues to grow and evolve with changing consumer preferences and increased interest in natural wellness products.

Aura Cacia is primarily known for:

  1. Essential oils: They offer a wide range of pure, single-note essential oils from various plants and botanicals.
  2. Aromatherapy products: Beyond pure oils, they produce blends, diffusers, and other aromatherapy accessories.
  3. Quality and purity: The company has built a reputation for providing high-quality, unadulterated essential oils.
  4. Accessibility: Their products are widely available in mainstream retail outlets, making essential oils more accessible to the general public.
  5. Sustainability efforts: Aura Cacia is recognized for its commitment to sustainable sourcing and ethical business practices.
  6. Education: They're known for providing educational resources about the proper use and benefits of essential oils.
  7. Affordable pricing: Compared to some high-end or multi-level marketing brands, Aura Cacia offers quality products at more accessible price points.
  8. Natural and wellness focus: As part of the Frontier Co-op family, they align with natural living and holistic wellness philosophies.

Aura Cacia has established itself as a trusted, mainstream brand in the essential oil and aromatherapy market, balancing quality with accessibility for consumers interested in natural wellness products.

Here are some pros and cons of Aura Cacia essential oils:

Pros:

  1. Quality: Aura Cacia is known for providing high-quality, pure essential oils.
  2. Accessibility: Their products are widely available in retail stores and online, making them easy to purchase.
  3. Transparency: The company is generally transparent about their sourcing and production methods.
  4. Sustainability: Aura Cacia emphasizes sustainable and ethical sourcing practices.
  5. Variety: They offer a wide range of essential oils and blends.
  6. Education: The company provides educational resources about essential oil use and benefits.
  7. Affordable: Compared to some high-end or MLM brands, Aura Cacia's prices are often more reasonable.

Cons:

  1. Not as potent: Some users report that Aura Cacia oils are not as potent as some other brands.
  2. Limited organic options: While they do offer organic oils, the selection is not as extensive as their conventional line.
  3. Packaging concerns: Some customers have reported issues with the plastic dropper inserts in the bottles.
  4. Less personalized service: As a retail brand, Aura Cacia doesn't offer the same level of personalized customer service as some direct-sales companies.
  5. Limited therapeutic grade claims: While their oils are high-quality, they don't market them as therapeutic grade, which some consumers prefer.
  6. Dilution concerns: Some users have questioned whether certain oils are pre-diluted, though the company maintains they sell 100% pure oils.
  7. Less exclusive: For those who prefer more boutique or exclusive brands, Aura Cacia's widespread availability might be a drawback.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right Company for You

When it comes to selecting an essential oil company, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Your choice will depend on your personal preferences, budget, and how you plan to use the oils.

  • If quality is your top priority and you don't mind paying premium prices, Young Living or doTERRA might be your best bet.
  • For high-quality oils at more moderate prices, consider Plant Therapy, Rocky Mountain Oils, or Nature's Fusions.
  • If you're new to essential oils or looking for basic oils for home use, NOW Essential Oils or Nature's Truth offer affordable entry points.
  • Nature's Fusions could be an excellent choice if you're looking for a balance of quality, affordability, and strong ethical practices.
  • Essentialoil.com might be a good option if you're looking for a wide variety of products at competitive prices, especially if you're comfortable doing additional research on quality and sourcing.
  • Mountain Rose Herbs is an excellent choice for those prioritizing organic, sustainable, and ethically sourced products, particularly if you're also interested in herbs and other botanical products.
  • Herbally Grounded could be a good fit if you value education and essential oil purchases and prefer a company with a more personal touch.
  • Wholesale Botanicals (wholesalebotanics.com) is ideal for businesses, practitioners, or individuals looking to buy essential oils in bulk at wholesale prices.
  • Edens Garden offers a great balance of quality, affordability, and transparency, making it a solid choice for both beginners and experienced users who appreciate extensive product options and educational resources.

Remember always to do your research, read reviews, and perhaps start with smaller purchases to test different companies.

I hope you achieve your goals using essential oils, and this blog post may help you take a step in that direction.

May God Bless your worthwhile endeavors,

Jeffery J. Jensen

Emotional Wheel

The emotional wheel, also known as the feelings wheel by Geoffrey Roberts (https://imgur.com/tCWChf6), can be a powerful tool when combined with essential oils for emotional support. This wheel categorizes emotions into primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, helping individuals identify and articulate their feelings more precisely. When using essential oils in conjunction with the emotional wheel, you can select specific oils that correspond to the emotions you're experiencing or wish to evoke. For example, if you identify feeling anxious on the wheel, you might choose lavender or bergamot oil for their calming properties. If you're seeking to boost joy, citrus oils like orange or lemon might be appropriate. By aligning the properties of essential oils with the emotions on the wheel, you can create a personalized aromatherapy practice that supports your emotional well-being. This approach can be particularly helpful in stress management, mood enhancement, and emotional processing, allowing for a more nuanced and targeted use of essential oils in emotional self-care routines.
