How Essential Oils Are Manufactured

Steam Distillation

Steam distillation is a common method for manufacturing essential oils from plant materials. The process begins by placing fresh or dried plant matter into a still. Steam is then introduced, either from an external source or by boiling water beneath the plant material. As the steam passes through the plant matter, it ruptures the oil glands, releasing volatile aromatic compounds. These compounds vaporize and mix with the steam. The steam and oil vapor mixture then passes through a cooling system, typically a condenser, where it returns to liquid form. This liquid is collected in a separator, where the essential oil naturally separates from the water due to differences in density. The oil, being lighter, floats on top of the water (also known as hydrosol) and can be easily siphoned off. This method effectively extracts oils from various plant parts, including leaves, flowers, roots, and bark, while preserving the delicate chemical composition of the essential oils.

Steam distillation, the primary method for manufacturing essential oils, produces a valuable by-product known as hydrosols or plant waters. As steam passes through the plant material, it captures both oil-soluble and water-soluble plant compounds. When condensing this vapor mixture, it separates into two layers: the essential oil on top and the hydrosol beneath.

Hydrosols contain minute amounts of essential oil (usually less than 5%) along with water-soluble plant compounds. While less concentrated than essential oils, hydrosols retain many of the plant's therapeutic properties and aromatic qualities. They are generally considered gentler and safer for use, making them suitable for a wider range of applications, including skincare, aromatherapy, and culinary uses.

Popular hydrosols include rose water, lavender water, and chamomile water. These products offer a milder fragrance and can be used directly on the skin as toners, in room sprays, or as flavorings in foods and beverages. Hydrosols are often more sustainable to produce and use, as they require less plant material per volume compared to essential oils. Additionally, they provide a way to utilize what would otherwise be a waste product from essential oil production, enhancing the overall efficiency and value of the distillation process.

Cold Processing

Cold processing, also known as cold pressing or expression, is a method used to manufacture essential oils primarily from citrus fruit peels. This technique is distinct from steam distillation and is particularly effective for extracting oils from citrus fruits like lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits. The process begins with the fruit's outer peel, which contains oil glands. In modern production, the whole fruit is placed in a machine that punctures the peel's oil glands while simultaneously expressing the oil. This is typically done through mechanical pressure or centrifugal force. The resulting mixture of oil and fruit juice is then separated, usually via centrifugation. This method is called "cold" because no heat is applied during the extraction process, which helps preserve the oil's natural aroma and chemical composition. Cold-pressed oils are often considered superior in quality and aroma to their heat-processed counterparts, as the lack of heat prevents the degradation of sensitive aromatic compounds. This technique yields essential oils that closely resemble the natural fragrance of the fresh fruit peel.

Eating a Lemon a Day

Why not eat a lemon a day instead of going through the cold processing manufacturing process above? Here are some videos from Dr. Eric Berg on the benefits of eating the entire lemon.

Essential Oil Density

Knowing the density of essential oils is crucial when making soap. It allows for precise measurements, ensuring the correct amount of oil is used in the formulation. Since essential oils vary widely in density, using volume measurements alone can lead to inconsistencies in essential oil potency. Density knowledge helps soapmakers calculate the correct weight of oil needed, maintaining proper ratios in the soap recipe. This precision is vital for creating a consistent soap batch. Additionally, understanding density can help optimize costs by preventing the overuse of these often expensive ingredients.

Here is a list of essential oil densities sold by Plant Therapy. Density values were obtained from the oil's Safety Data Sheets (SDS). The CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) Numbers are unique numerical identifiers assigned to chemical substances, which can be helpful in precisely identifying essential oils. Some essential oils may have multiple CAS numbers depending on their botanical source, chemotype, or production method.

Essential Oil Density from Safety Data Sheets

It's important to note that the density of an essential oil can vary slightly based on factors like the specific chemotype, growing conditions, and extraction method. Therefore, for the most accurate results, it's best to use the density information provided by your specific supplier whenever possible.

  1. Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young: This comprehensive book is considered one of the most authoritative sources on essential oils. It includes density data for many essential oils.
  2. Online databases: Websites like PubChem (maintained by the National Institutes of Health) provide scientific data on many compounds, including essential oils. They often list density among other physical properties.
  3. Essential oil supplier websites: Many reputable essential oil suppliers provide technical data sheets for their products, which often include density information.
  4. The Essential Oil Directory: This online resource compiles data on various essential oils, including their densities.
  5. Scientific journals: Research papers in journals related to aromatherapy, cosmetic science, or natural products often publish density data for specific essential oils.

Essential Oils In Soap-Making

Incorporating essential oils into soap-making offers numerous benefits, enhancing the final product's quality and appeal. These natural extracts provide pleasant, long-lasting fragrances ranging from soothing lavender to invigorating citrus, allowing soap makers to create unique scent profiles without relying on synthetic perfumes. Beyond their aromatic qualities, many essential oils contribute therapeutic properties to the soap. For instance, tea tree oil may add antibacterial effects, while eucalyptus can provide a refreshing and decongestant quality. Some oils, like calendula or chamomile, are known for their skin-soothing properties, making them ideal for sensitive skin formulations. Essential oils can also act as natural preservatives, potentially extending the shelf life of handmade soaps. Additionally, using essential oils aligns with the growing demand for natural and organic products, making these soaps more marketable to health-conscious customers.

Do Essential Oils Evaporate In Soaps

The concern about essential oils evaporating easily and potentially losing their benefits in soap is a valid point of discussion in aromatherapy and natural product circles. Here's an analysis of this belief:

  1. Volatility of essential oils:
Essential oils are indeed volatile compounds, meaning they evaporate readily at room temperature. This property is what allows us to smell them and is key to their use in aromatherapy.
  2. Soap-making process:
During the soap-making process, especially in hot-process methods, some of the more volatile components of essential oils can be lost due to heat exposure.
  3. Storage and curing:
Even in cold-process soap making, some essential oil content may evaporate during the curing period, which can last several weeks.
  4. Wash-off products:
Soaps are wash-off products, meaning the contact time with the skin is limited. This brief exposure might reduce the potential benefits of the essential oils.
  5. Concentration in final product:
The amount of essential oil that remains in the final soap product is often quite low, which could limit its effectiveness.

However, it's important to consider counterarguments:

  1. Lingering effects:
Even brief contact with essential oils during washing can leave trace amounts on the skin, which may provide some benefits.
  2. Aromatherapy benefits:
The scent released during use can still provide aromatherapeutic effects, even if brief.
  3. Synergistic effects:
Essential oils may interact with other soap ingredients to create beneficial compounds that remain after the washing process.
  4. Skin absorption:
While contact time is brief, some oil components may be absorbed by the skin during use.
  5. Varying volatility:
Not all components of essential oils evaporate at the same rate. Some less volatile compounds may remain in the soap and on the skin after use.

In conclusion, while it's true that the benefits of essential oils in soap may be reduced compared to leave-on products, they are not necessarily eliminated entirely. The extent of benefits will depend on factors such as the specific oils used, their concentration, the soap-making process, and individual skin responses. For those seeking maximum benefits from essential oils, leave-on products or aromatherapy applications might be more effective, but essential oil-infused soaps can still offer pleasant fragrances and potential skin benefits.

Skin Clearing Blend - HD Clear by doTERRA

Skin-Clearing Blend was formulated for acne and general skin health. Its major ingredient, Black Cumin seed, is not an essential oil, but has trace amounts of essential oil within it. Black Cumin is prized in many Islamic countries for its healing properties. Skin Clearing Blend combines the healing properties of Black Cumin with other essential oils.

Skin-Clearing Blend emotionally supports suppressed anger, guilt, and self-judgement. The individual in need of this blend may harbor feelings of guilt or anger from the past. These deeply buried feelings may exist outside the individual's conscious awareness. Yet these feelings of pain or anger literally "boil" to the surface. If the individual does not deal with these feelings appropriately, they may manifest through lashing out or blaming others.

Skin-Clearing Blend supports individuals by increasing self-acceptance and self-love. It assists them in seeing their inherent worth, regardless of physical appearance. It encourages the healthy release and expression of feelings of anger. Skin-Clearing Blend invites individuals to look past menial imperfections and to replace self-judgement with self-acceptance.

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Cinnamon supports the reproductive system and helps heal sexual issues. It assists individuals in accepting their body and embracing their physical attractiveness. Cinnamon dispels fear of rejection and nurtures healthy sexuality. It rekindles sexual energies when there has been repression, trauma, or abuse. It can also bring clarity to souls who struggle with their sexual identity.

Cinnamon also assists individuals in relationships where insecurities are shown by jealousy or control. It encourages the soul to let go of control and allow others to be free. Cinnamon can nurture strong relationships based on mutual love and respect.

Where there are other insecurities covered by pretense, facade, and pride, Cinnamon invites individuals to be honest and vulnerable, thereby allowing true intimacy to emerge.

Negative Emotions: body rejection, fear, controlling, jealousy, sexual abuse, sexual repression or overactive sexuality.

Positive Emotions: body-acceptance, attractive, accepted, healthy sexuality, harmonious, intimacy

What negative emotions do I need to address? If exhibit dishonest, lying, cutting corners, cheating, or lack of integrity in my daily actions, then I know I have underlying issues with greed, arrogance, and disrespect.

Always this dishonesty and lack of integrity are based on greed, arrogance, and disrespect.

Ginger Essential Oil

Ginger holds no reservations. This oil has a purpose and will fulfill it! Ginger powerfully persuades individuals to be fully present and participate in life. It teaches that to be successful in life, one must be wholly committed to it.

Ginger addresses deep patterns of victim mentality, which is evidenced by feelings of powerlessness, believing everything is outside one's control, refusing to take responsibility for life, or blaming life circumstances on other people or outside influences. The victim feels stuck as they decentralize or disown responsibility and blame others for their misfortunes.

Ginger empowers individuals in taking complete responsibility for their life circumstances It infuses a warrior-like mentality based on personal integrity, centralized responsibility, and individual choice. Here, the individual sees themselves as the creator of their own life. No longer waiting for outside circumstances to change, they choose their own destiny. The empowered individual assumes full responsibility and accountability for the consequences of their actions or inactions.

Negative Emotions: victim, powerless, unwilling to take responsibility for self or life, defeated, not present, stuck, blaming

Positive Emotions: empowered, capable, purposeful, accountable, responsible

Emotions & Essential Oils, 5th 2016, p. 39
